October is breast cancer awareness month. You may have a family member or friend who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, and if you don’t, you certainly know someone who does. Awareness is more than knowing that breast cancer exists and affects almost a quarter of a million women a year – it’s about knowing what preventative steps to take as a woman.
Tieks was nice enough to send me a pair of pink flats as a part of their awareness campaign. When they asked me to be a part of sharing awareness to their followers, I was immediately on board. In 1978 my Grandma, Edith Frazier, was diagnosed with breast cancer. I called my Grandma the other day and she gave me some wonderful, wise words and shared a bit about her experience.
My Grandma is a true testament to the importance of taking preventative measures with breast cancer. She was lucky enough to have all her cysts removed by doctors. She never have to go through chemo, and she never had to take any medication. “I had to accept it. It takes time and patience. To me it was a miracle I didn’t have to go through chemo,” she told me. “I never cried because what will happen happens. I was gonna do everything I could to help it. I put this in front of God. God gave me piece of mind.” My grandfather was with her throughout the whole process. She says he was he was “precious” to her and was completely accepting.
Every day I’m thankful for my Grandma and all the other resilient women of the world who have had to battle breast cancer. My Grandma still has to keep up with her mammograms, but she’s back at it in life and has a positive attitude. “Your mind has everything to do with it. You can lay around and say ‘I’m going to die,’ or you can say ‘I’m going to conquer this.'”
