Part 1: Why Is Eating Healthy So Hard?
No topic is more fervently debated in health and fitness than what and how we should eat. We have become obsessed with food. We’ve had countless studies on the subject, and every time you read the news it seems each study is contradicting the last. The government’s dietary guidelines have literally changed shape over the decades, morphing from a pyramid, to a pyramid with steps, to the current My Plate, which at least makes more common sense considering nobody eats off a pyramid.
And just about anybody with a pulse has chimed in on what’s the best diet for everybody. It’s truly dizzying, even for a person like me who studies this stuff daily. How can anybody keep up with the cascade of “eat this, not that” contradictions? And why can’t all these smart people just agree on something, so we can all start doing it dammit?!
A few reasons behind this mess:
- Money: There’s a lot of money in the food industry. Write a book that promises rapid and easy fat loss, and you can expect a nice pay day. Whether this plan has been thoroughly tested and researched isn’t necessary to write a money maker these days.
- Subjective Opinions: Anybody with an internet connection and an opinion can tell you what’s right or wrong about nutrition. All it takes is one very persuasive person to tell someone to put butter in their coffee, and what do you know, a movement has been sparked.
- False Promises: Nothing grabs the attention of readers more than, “The Real Secret to Fat Loss They Don’t Want You to Know About!” Or my personal favorite, “Nutrition Experts Have Been Lying to You! Learn the Real Way to Eat for Fat Loss.” Advertisers know how to rope people in and convince them to buy weight-loss products that don’t work.
Truth is we know exactly why we gain weight and how to lose it. It’s not complicated and it’s not one specific food or food ingredient. It comes down to two words – energy balance. No numbers, no secret ingredients, and no fuss over irrelevant claims.
Stay tuned for next Friday where I’ll talk about what this mysterious “energy balance” is all about.

Great post! I struggle to eat healthy now that I have kids. I really need to get on a better schedule. Its so much easier to run and grab fast food for them while we are on the go.
