It’s so funny what brought on me wanting to make these southern homemade biscuits. I’ve been binging Housewives of New Jersey (during my middle of the night feedings). Caroline was having company over and cooking a southern meal vs her usual Italian meal. She’s one of my favorite TV moms and I want to do things the way she does. This is also why I asked you all for the authentic Italian meatball recipe. I want to learn how to make them too.
This southern homemade biscuits recipe is super easy. Prep time is about 20 min (realistically) and cooking time… that all depends on your oven. I’d watch them closely so they are cooked just the way you like them. You want them to look more than golden, with a little brown to them. Once you take them out of the oven the brown darkens. I like mine more on the darker side. I prefer mine a little darker then these in the image. These were my first round and also a little smaller then I’d like. FOllow the recipe below and they’ll be more golden and bigger.
*TIPS:
- If I know I’m going to make these the next day I will put the butter in the freezer. That’s key to making these… SUPER cold butter.
- We are dairy free so I used a vegan butter and almond milk and these turned out to be super yummy
Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 tbsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 4 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
- 3/4 cup COLD butter
- 1 egg
- 1 cup milk
Directions
Blend together all the dry ingredients in a bowl. Using a dough blender mix in butter. Butter should end up being a pea size. You don’t want it to be melted. I keep it all in the freezer and add in a little at a time, as I blend. Butter melts a little by the warmth of your hand when you kneed it later.
Add egg and milk to dry mix
With your hands, fold all the ingredients in bowl (takes about 10-15 handfulls to get all ingredients to combine)
Once ingredients are folded enough to stick together pour a little flour out on the counter top. Place dough on flour and kneed. The warmth of your hands will melt the butter chunks a little and this is okay. You need to knee and fold the dough about 15 times. Use more flour if it’s sticking too much.
Once dough is all combined roll out into 1″ thick. Using a biscuit cutter cut out biscuits. I’ll refold whats left and use as much of the dough as I can.
Place on a baking sheet in the oven at 450 degree for 20 min.
This should get you at least 12 biscuits. Melt some butter and honey in the microwave and paint on top after you take them out of the oven. Include your kids and have a blast!
Let me know how they turn out.
